Yukon In The Summer

Yukon is an amazing destination in summer or winter. Here’s our top suggestions of things to do in summer:
      Land of the Midnight Sun
Yukon is the land of the midnight sun, where skies are glorious and summer light doesn’t quit, with the best time to visit between May and August. Life flourishes under hours of intense sunlight as the land hosts millions of migratory birds and explodes in wildflower blooms. On summer solstice, June 21, the sun doesn't set at the Arctic Circle—the further north one travels, the higher the sun and the longer the season of the midnight sun. All over the Yukon, summer is a busy time of festivals and outdoor play. Why not mark this event with a picnic at the top of the dome at Dawson City or explore the sandy beaches of Carcross. An important traditional event for summer solstice is National Indigenous Peoples Day festivities held in communities throughout the territory.  We suggest you use the Yukon’s endless twilight to play golf or take a river trip at midnight or take a dip in the Yukon River Ice Pool.
          Yukon First Nations
Art clearly comes naturally in the Yukon—especially within First Nations peoples who have deep connections to this land and stories passed down through many generations. From music to beading to dancing to carving, First Nations artists all over the territory combine their unique visions with ancient traditions. Visit Keith Wolfe Smarch a master Tlingit carver in Carcross who tells the stories of his people in wood, metal and ivory. His masks, totem poles, regalia and jewellery have become a must-see in galleries, businesses, communities and collections in the Yukon and around the world. There are also many cultural centres and museums, such as Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre which allows visitors to explore the history and formation of First Nations.

              Activities

For the relaxed traveller, there are plenty of options from soaking up the sun in the outdoor pools of Nordic Eclipse Hot Springs to gentle hikes in the Yukon’s great outdoors. You can choose your own pace from the Goldensides hike in Tombstone Territorial Park to more advanced trails in Kluane National Park which is home to Canada’s tallest peaks including Mount Logan. If you prefer two wheels the Yukon can offer rental bikes and guided rides. Or if you’re looking for the full experience, we have the thrill a minute kind and all with breath taking panoramas. Keep your eyes peeled for bluebirds, caribou, elk, and moose.

                  Kayaking

Ever wanted to try a challenge? Why not try kayaking on the Yukon River. With the mild summer temperatures, enjoy a wonderful day spotting wildlife from the water and enjoying the serenity. These trips can be long or short to suit your comfort levels. From a 3 hour paddle to a 5-day trip, there are many options as well as opportunities to explore Lake Laberge, McQuesten River and the Teslin River.

                      Music festivals

Celebrations including Dawsons City Music Festival and Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival allow visitors to soak up both the music and warm hospitality of the region. Enjoy the Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival at Haines Junction, June 9-11, 2023 which includes a wide variety of music with something for everyone. The Dawson City Music Festival is held under the midnight sun July 21st-23rd 2023 and showcases local talent through music and song writing.

                          Wildlife

Have you ever wanted to see a bear in the wild? Yukon’s grizzly bear population is one of Canada’s largest and most stable in North America. If you are intent on getting the best chance of seeing one head to the Alsek River corridor in Kluane National Park, the Yukon’s UNESCO World Heritage Site which has been designated a special preservation area. Many visitors to the Yukon spot black bears too on the side of the road, while hiking and paddling, or even from the air whilst flightseeing! For the wildlife lovers there is the chance to see caribou, elk, and moose on Yukon’s legendary trails.

Does this sound appealing? Why not book a trip to the Yukon? They are ready to welcome you with open arms.

Imagine swimming thousands of miles to find that special someone. Whales complete this every single year, known as a whale migration, to find suitable habitat for feeding and reproducing. In British Columbia, these stunning orcas, also known as killer whales, are a prominent site and seeing them is a once in a lifetime experience. As well as orcas, expect to find humpback whales, grey whales and minke whales. These amazing creatures call BC their home from April to October. When the sun is out the whales come to play. From tail flukes to pectoral slaps, go for a whale watching trip and you can bask in their playful nature and enjoy the sunset with a relaxing drink, perfect for families and solo travellers. You can also go paddleboarding with orcas for a unique perspective from the water to see these magnificent creatures. You must, of course, always keep four hundred metres away from them for their safety and yours.

                              Bear viewing

Reconnect with nature in BC and experience spectacular wildlife viewing in stunning landscapes.

Search for grizzly bears, black bears and the rare spirit bear in pristine river valleys in the Great Bear Rainforest. Spot whales, porpoise, sea lions and much more while exploring the Great Bear Sea.

Cubs emerge from their dens in early spring and by August they will be sniffing the beginnings of the great salmon run. Autumn is a feeding frenzy for wildlife. Eagles, seals, sea lions, wolves, whales and bears fill up on salmon for the long winter ahead.

Situated 70 kilometres north of Campbell River, and accessible by floatplane, Glendale Cove is home to one of the largest concentrations of grizzly (brown) bears in BC. In the peak autumn season when the salmon are returning to the river, it’s not uncommon for guests to see up to 40 bears from the viewing platforms. In spring and summer bear viewing is done from the water for a good view of the bears feeding and this is often the best time to see small cubs.
