Day 1 - Whitehorse
Arrive Whitehorse and stay for one night. You will receive a briefing on the trip from your guides in the evening.
Day 2
After breakfast you depart along the Alaska Highway to the Kluane Game Sanctuary where the rafts will be loaded. At this point the Tatshenshini is a narrow stream. Before long, you will float deeper into the St. Elias Mountains where you will encounter class 2-4 white-water rapids. You will float from the Yukon into British Columbia.
Day 3
Today the river meanders quietly through the broad valley dotted with oxbow lakes. You will be treated to your first view of the Alsek Range.
Day 4
Weather permitting, this is a hiking day.
Days 5-6
Float past the Carmine peaks and the O’Connor River with great views of the far off St. Elias Range. Moose, mountain goats, grizzly bears and bald eagles frequent the wide gravel river banks.
Day 7
You will begin to see the many glaciers of the area – there are 27 in all and the views are glorious.
Day 8
You will speed along with the current; the voluminous Alsek River joins from the north. The surrounding peaks become higher and increasingly majestic. You will stop to hike on the dramatic surface of Walker Glacier.
Day 9
Back on the river you will pass the Novatak Glacier and float on to Grand Plateau Glaciers, where huge slabs of ice form icebergs in the lake.
Day 10
Conditions permitting, you will paddle toward the face of the glaciers.
Day 11
The Alsek passes through a transition from the tallest peaks to the broad flat Pacific coastline. Here your journey ends and a chartered aircraft will fly you back to Whitehorse for your final night.
