Haida Gwaii, (formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands), is a rugged archipelago of islands off the northwest coast of British Columbia. The islands are remote and serene and offer visitors the opportunity to visit pristine rivers, miles of sandy beaches and ancient rainforest which are home to abundant wildlife and a vibrant First Nation culture. The population of the islands is approximately 5,000, at least one third are Haida who have thousands of years of history and whose world-famous art represents lifetimes of traditions.
Since time immemorial, the Haida people have respected, honoured and protected this sacred place. A stay here will allow you to share in their rich culture and explore their untouched land. Haida Gwaii’s unique fauna includes six native land mammal subspecies that are not found anywhere else on earth, including North America’s largest black bear, known as “taan” in the Xaayda Haida language. In the waters surrounding Haida Gwaii, twenty species of whales and dolphins have been recorded, with grey and humpback whales sighted regularly during spring migration. Over 1.5 million seabirds nest along the coast, and the bald eagle is readily spotted in the skies above.
The Haida House at Tllaal is a cedar lodge with easy beach access. It features a full-service gourmet restaurant, bar and patio with river views; 10 comfortable guestrooms with private facilities and showers and a relaxing den with complimentary Wi-Fi. There are also two two-bedroom oceanfront cabins, which are ideal for four people travelling together or if you would like more privacy away from the main lodge. The dining room menu features a variety of unique appetisers, fresh seafood, local seasonal vegetables, charbroiled meats, decadent desserts; all prepared with the utmost dedication. An ever-changing Table D’hôtel menu is provided on special occasions, where the chef creates a unique seasonal meal with an accent on traditional Haida foods.
