While Algonquin Park is Canada’s most popular canoeing holiday destination, few people have experienced the stunning beauty of the park in winter. Frozen lakes, waist deep snow, wildlife tracks, the howl of a wolf and the crisp clear air are just a few of the delights of a winter experience. The Almaquin Highlands and Northwest corner of Algonquin Park are home to some of the most celebrated dogsled trails in Canada. The region features a wide variety of terrain including logging roads, narrow boreal forest footpaths, and wide-open lakes.
Day 1
Fly from UK to Toronto where you will stay for two nights.
Toronto is a world-class city that buzzes with life no matter what time of year you visit. It boasts a fascinating mix of multi-cultural neighbourhoods, including Chinatown, Little Italy, Greektown and little Portugal. Do not miss a ride in the glass-fronted lift to the top of the CN Tower for stunning views of the city and Lake Ontario, or a visit to the Ontario Science Centre and Hockey Hall of Fame. After a day of sightseeing, shopping or urban skating, watch the lights set the city aglow as evening sets in. Toronto boasts some incredible restaurants, great nightlife, and well as theatres and unique museum nights. The Toronto Light Festival takes place between January and March and fully illuminates the Distillery Historic District, a great place for boutique shopping, restaurants and entertainment. For a truly Canadian evening, why not take in an ice hockey game.
Day 3
Meet at the rendezvous point for your 3½ hour transfer to the Algonquin Log Cabin, where you will stay for two nights on full board.
Located off the beaten track, the Algonquin Log Cabin feels like a secret hideout deep in the wilderness. Off the grid, without electricity, telephone, internet or WiFi, this is the ultimate place to disconnect, slow down and unwind. A large part of its charm is the intimate nature of being built for just 14 people. Home cooked meals are served at the large harvest table where everyone eats family style together in front of massive stone fireplace.
After a tasty lunch, snowshoe to a forest lookout. Look for wildlife tracks and learn about Algonquin in winter. Return for appetizers and dinner in front of the stone fireplace. Later try your hand at torch lit broomball or skating on the lake.
Day 4
Rise and enjoy a hearty Canadian breakfast. Learn or refresh back-country ski skills before taking off across Surprise Lake and the Island Circuit. Stride and glide through the hemlock trails and enjoy the silence of the snow-laden forest. Return to the cabin for a hot lunch and fresh-baked dessert. The afternoon has options: ski or snowshoe the highlands of Kettle Lake; ski to the wall tent across Surprise Lake; or relax and grab a book in front of the fire. Finish your afternoon with a sauna and hot shower.
Day 5
“Harnesses”, “gee” and “ha”, “gang lines!” These are just a few of the expressions you learn in the dog sled orientation before mushing your own team of huskies on a dog sled trail ride. Enjoy a hearty lunch at a local diner before your departure back to Toronto, for your final night.
Day 6
Spend your day exploring the city again before your flight back to the UK.
